Meta ships Muse Spark 1.1 with its first paid developer API

Meta released Muse Spark 1.1 on 9 July 2026, and shipped it with its first paid developer API.

Why the API is the story

Meta's position in AI has been defined by giving things away. The Llama line made open weights mainstream, and the strategic logic was commoditisation: if the model layer is free, value accrues to the platform above it — which Meta already owns.

A paid developer API is a different posture. It means Meta now has a product where the model itself is the thing being sold, competing directly with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google on their own commercial terms rather than undercutting them.

What it does not mean

It does not mean the open-weight strategy is dead. Llama 4 remains in the field under the Meta Llama Community License, and open weights and a paid API can coexist comfortably — a free tier for adoption, a paid tier for the frontier. Watch whether the next Llama generation ships as openly as the last one; that is the real signal.

For developers here

A paid Meta API adds one more vendor to price against, which is straightforwardly good. The practical caution is the same as with any first-generation commercial API: rate limits, regional availability and pricing all tend to move in the first few months.
